The Theodore R. Gibson Memorial Fund, Inc. (TRGMF) is a 501© 3 private, not for profit organization that was formed and incorporated in 1983 to unify and bridge gaps between diverse groups within the local Coconut Grove and Miami-Dade County communities. This twenty-seven year old organization was founded in memory of the late Canon Theodore R. Gibson, one of the first black commissioners in the city of Miami and a well recognized and outstanding civil rights leader in the 1960's.
Father Gibson's commitment to community service is continued by his widow, Mrs. Thelma Gibson, who is the founder and president emeritus of the Memorial Fund. Mrs. Gibson is a retired Registered Nurse with a Bachelors Degree from Teacher's College at Columbia University, New York. With over twenty-seven years of experience in professional nursing and more than eight years providing social services, she has long since established a reputation as a leader within the community of health care.
Throughout its existence, TRGMF has been a meeting house and event site for various start-up and intermediary organizations in the social services and after school intervention fields. In 2002, the Fund agreed to jump start the Thelma Gibson Health Initiative (TGHI). At TGHI, we believe in reaching out and helping the community by " Building Healthy Minds and Bodies".
